Amanda Mitchell
Health Insurance Marketplace Project Manager, Freeman Health System
At the time of Joplin’s May 2011 tornado, Amanda worked as an account manager for State Farm Insurance. She assisted numerous clients as they put the pieces of their lives back together after the disaster. She soon felt the call to do more for her hometown’s recovery efforts and joined Rebuild Joplin in January 2012 as volunteer manager. She was responsible for overseeing AmeriCorps volunteers as well as coordinating, scheduling and providing orientation for all incoming volunteers doing construction work on tornado-damaged homes for under-insured or uninsured homeowners. She facilitated a collaborative approach to volunteer management with members of the Long Term Recovery Committee to ensure volunteers had sufficient, meaningful work on construction or non-construction projects.
Amanda is currently the account manager and Health Insurance Marketplace project manager for Freeman Health System. She serves on the board of directors for Soroptimist International of Joplin, National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors of Southwest Missouri and Jasper County Association for Social Service. She served as co-chair for the Citizens Advisory Recovery Team (CART) from 2011 to 2013. Amanda volunteers regularly with United Way of Southwest Missouri/Southeast Kansas, Ronald McDonald House and the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce’s Young Professionals Network.
Honors include United Way’s Volunteer of the Year (2016), Soroptimist International’s Best Woman of the Year (2016), Joplin Regional Business Journal’s Most Influential Women (2015), Young Professional of the Year by the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce (2012) and Joplin Tri-State Business Journal’s 15 People to Watch (2011).
Amanda graduated from Joplin High School and holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Missouri Southern State University. She lives in Joplin with her husband, Philip.
